area nissan dealers sports xtra. >> thanks for staying up with us tonight for nissan sports xtra. i'm lindsay murphy. the u.s. women's cup playing athrill but first to the action on the diamond. for the first time in a week nationals fans didn't have to hold their breath and scoot to edge of their seats every half inning because today the nats ended their streak of six straight one-run games. the lead was modest but it was enough and now the team can relax a bit during the all-star break. jordan zimmerman on the hill, a team best 8.2 e.r.a. he attempts to check the swing and then he's out of there. zim strikes out 6 in 6 1/3 shutout innings. bottom 6, zimmerman laying down his eighth sacrifice bunt of the year. that moves ian desmond to second. same inning, desmond in scoring position for roger bernadine.

he slaps one to the right. the nationals take a 1-0 lead. we move to the bottom of the 8th. rick ankiel sick of these one- run games adds some insurance for the nats. that's his third home run of the season into the seats in right field. tying up the loose ends, cole garner ends the game, his 21st save in 26 tries. nats win 2-0 and head into the all-star break with a 46-46 record. this year marks the first time since the inaugural season of 2005 the nats finished with at least a .500 record at the all-star break. the last five seasons the team never won more than 38 games to this point. what does a .500 finish mean for the rest of the season? >> i don't think we've been at .500 at break for a while. i don't think i've ever been. that's a pretty good .500. i guess it's kind of a mini accomplishment, but we're not by any means happy with it. we know we have a good team and

[ male announcer ] and we think that's the best prize of all. ♪ welcome back. this afternoon at the women's world cup team usa battled brazil in one of the most thrilling games in tournament history, winner advancing to the semifinals, but this affair needed two extra periods, stoppage time and penalty kicks to decide the outcome.

66 minutes, u.s. leads 1-0. brazil's marta with a nice move in the box. rachel buehrle battles with march it, both go down. foul called, penalty kick. buehrle gets the red card and is ejected. the u.s. is forced to play with 10 players. on the ensuing tkcristiane is stopped and preserves the u.s. lead. brazil gets another pk for someone entering the box too early and ma tay makes no mistake. so the game is -- marta makes no mistake, so the game is all tied 1-1. brazil is on side, but it's not called. the crossing pass comes to marta. with her left foot she lobs it into the corner beating hope solo. brazil leads 2-1. now to the 122nd minutes, seconds left when megan rapinoe sends her cross into the buck. abby wambach with the header, tying the game 2-2 and forces penalty kicks to decide our winner. the u lead 4-3 in pks.

alexandria native allie krieger stepping up, has the game winner. the u.s. defeats brazil 5-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals against france. >> that is a perfect example of what this country is about, what the history of this team has always been. we never give up. we literally went to the last second. how many penalties has hope saved legitimately today? we never gave up. brazil is a great team. i don't have many words for this, unbelievable. >>. the pga john deere classic, a local fan rooting for steve stricker who began the day with a two-shot lead. on the 9th hole he showed some incredible touch. just to the right speed here the long putt falls for a birdie dropping strecker to 22- under par and gives him a five- shot lead. 23-year-old kyle stanley

rallied from five shots back making birdies on 78 holes including this one on 14. stanley moved to 21-under, one shot behind stricker. stricker on 16 buried in the green side bunker, tries to get out but fails. he bogeys the hole and falls to 20-under and two shots behind stanley. here's stanley on 18. he needs this par putt to maintain his one-shot advantage. stanley finishes at 21-under par. back to stricker on 18 putting from just off green for birdie and victory and talk about crutch. it drops. stricker wins the john deere classic for the third straight year,ly 11th pga tour history. time for a short break. an 11-year-old steals the show at bobby mitchell's hall of fame golf tournament when we come back. stick around.  -dad, why are you getting that? -that's my cereal.

welcome back. it's not every day that 45 hall of famers from different sports gather in the same room, but year in, year out former redskin bobby mitchell makes it happen. his charity golf event, less about golf, more about saving lives. here's dave ross. >> reporter: 21 years, 45 hall of famers, one common goal, since 1990 redskins legend bobby mitchell has been holding his charity golf tournament in an effort to raise funds and ultimately find a cure for

blood cancer. >> i appreciate the 18 hall of famers, 10 more than i've seen anywhere and they were asking me how you get me here? they bought into what we were trying to do because athletes are about kids. they're about young folks. that's all i had going. >> reporter: golf is merely a backdrop here at the bobby mitchell hall of fame classic because for these great athletes it is still about winning, but today it's about winning at the game of life. >> athletes say it's about competition, but what can i do more? how can i help more? that was the first phone call i got from bobby inviting me to his tournament. you can't tell bobby no. >> reporter: one of this year's heros is taylor long, an 11- year-old from olney maryland diagnosed with leukemia in 2008, but now with the help of funds raised from tournaments just like this one taylor is cancer free. >> when i was in the hospital, i was like my dad said, i

didn't want to talk to my friends because i thought they wouldn't be able to handle it and i didn't want to see them going through what i went through. and going through cancer made me stronger than i used to be. >> i think that the hall of famers, you know, bring a certain amount of credibility to the cause. a lot of people like you saw bobby saying there, you know, when you put your name to something, you got to show up and the fact that they show up for taylor, for the cause to fight cancer is just great. >> reporter: with the help of his hall of fame friends mitchell's tournament has raised over $7 million since its inception and newcomers like linebacker chris hamburger feel honored to be here. >> it's tough when you see these young people and i mean these diseases can affect any age group, but when you see these young kids, it's
